Final Blog: Robinson Crusoe

The final few chapters start with Crusoe giving each of his new men, Friday, Friday's father and the Spaniard a gun for protection and for battle. One day, Friday sees a ship far off and Crusoe identifies it as English and it makes port. The men get off and 3 slaves are left behind. Crusoe approaches the slaves to find that they are the captain and 2 members of his crew. Crusoe liberates him and gets granted free passage to England. The others suspect something is up and charge at Crusoe and his men. Crusoe confuses the men by having others shout from different directions so that they wont know where the attack comes from. Crusoe and his men overwhelm the others and the seamen surrender to Crusoe and the Captain. Crusoe then devises a plan to seize the ship and it works. The captain greets Crusoe with wines and foods. On December 19, 1686, Crusoe boards the ship to England after spending 28 years on the island. When Crusoe returns to England, his money is still protected and most of his family is dead. Crusoe then decides to travel to Lisbon to seek out his plantations in Brazil. When Crusoe returns there, the Portuguese captain that originally brought him there tells him his plantations are in good hands. Crusoe learns that his plantations are worth a lot of money and Crusoe is overwhelmed as he is now a rich man. Crusoe sends money to his remaining siblings and decides to move back to England. Crusoe then travels the land and lands in Spain. He hates the weather there and moves on to France. On his way, his group is surrounded by 300 wolves and they somehow survive by scaring the wolves. This was an amazing feat as they should have been dead. Crusoe eventually ends up back in England and sells his investments in Brazil for 33,000 pieces of eight, which is a lot of money. Crusoe marries, but his wife dies and after this, Crusoe goes to be a private trader. His journeys here bring him back to the original island where the story started. Crusoe finds that the Spaniards there have been living well and have just survived a cannibal attack. Crusoe provides them with many gifts and the Spaniards strive on the island.

Crusoe seemed more aggressive in the final chapters as we see him prepare for war and go to war. He really gets into the whole fighting thing as hes handing people guns and such. Crusoe is also very sincere as he sends money to his remaining relatives and gives the Portuguese man some money as well. He also still keeps his religion intact as he stops himself from doing many things due to his religious beliefs. The theme of these last few chapters is that the poor get rich in the end. Also, those that suffer get to rejoice later because we saw Crusoe suffer on the island for 28 years and when he gets off, he is rewarded with a ton of money and he is happy. The novel suggests that you just have to deal with the tough times in your life because if you make it through them, there will be rewards at the end. It is saying that those that thought it out and don't complain win at the end. This ending reminds me of "Holes" because the main character in that book/movie struggles at a boot camp and in the end, his family becomes rich when they find a treasure chest that belonged to their great grandfather. Overall, I have learned in life that if you tough it out, you'll be happy in the end with rewards. You have to play the hand you're dealt and shouldn't try and change it because GOD has a plan for you and you should follow it.

Blog #4: Robinson Crusoe

We start with Crusoe sharply avoiding the cannibals on the island. He changes everything he does in order to avoid them. Later on May 16th, Crusoe hears shots firing and believes it is a ship. He canoes out to the boat only to find is a wrecked ship. He recovers whatever he can from the wreck and goes back to the island. Later, Crusoe sees two natives of the island being attacked by the cannibals. he watches as one is ripped apart and the other survives and runs to Crusoe. He trust's Crusoe and Crusoe allows him to stay with him. Crusoe names him "Friday", the day Crusoe saves the native's life. Crusoe teaches him bits of English and teaches him how to cultivate as well, which Friday helps Crusoe do regularly. Crusoe begins to love Friday and learns that the cannibals come to the island every once in awhile. He also learns that he is somewhere near Trinidad. Crusoe then teaches Friday about religion, but struggles to teach him why evil exists in this world. Crusoe and Friday then make a boat that they will use to sail to Friday's native lands in December. Then, as Crusoe and Friday approach to go to the Cannibal's Island, the cannibals approach them. Crusoe and Friday use their weapons to fight off many of the Cannibals, who were attacking many prisoners. Friday is delighted as one of the prisoners is his own father. Crusoe and Friday carry the injured prisoners back to his place and tend to them there.

Crusoe changes slightly. He takes in a native that was being attacked and brings him in and becomes his friend. I feel happy for Crusoe becausehe finally found a companion. He has taght him how to speak English and together they fought off the cannibals to save more lives. The theme of these chapters is Friendship because we can see how Crusoe acts now that he has a friend on the island. I think he is much more open and joyous and isn't hating on life as much. The novel suggests that sometimes misery doesn't love company but rather a friend that can save them from situations. Crusoe was all alone on this island by himsefl and terrified by the cannibals and now he has a mate and I believe it has changed him. He starts to lvoe Friday and I believe they have a good thing going and it makes Crusoe happy. I hope that Crusoe and Friday can go to Friday's native land and Crusoe can either be happy there or be rescued there. He has gone through so much and really deserves something special. This reminds me of Lord of the Rings, where Frodo is sometimes unhappy and not loving life and whenever he's with Sam, hes full of life and gets his objectives straight and accomplishes more. In these chapters, i've learned that Crusoe is located somewhere near Trinidad. I've also learned that all Crusoe needed was a companion in Friday to be happy and i'm happy for him.

Robinson Crusoe: Blog 3

We pick up where we left off, now two years Crusoe has been on the island. he starts to discover the western part of the island where he sees land that he believes to belong to the Spanish American. Crusoe then spends awhile building a shelf for his abode where he plants rice and crops during the rainy seasons. he has a bird problem but fixes it. Crusoe eventually learns to make pots and they are of good use to him. Crusoe then wastes months trying to construct a canoe, only to see his plan fail miserably. By this time, he has been on the island for four years. Crusoe later finds himself short on gunpowder and creates a trap to catch goats as he is unable to shoot them now. He creates a farm where he gets butter, milk and cheese from the goats. One day, Crusoe then finds a "naked" human foot in the sand and Crusoe is terrified and believes the devil has followed him to the island. Crusoe then believes it could be a human foot and lives the next two years in fear, protecting his homes and goats as if they were being threatened. Crusoe then finds carnage of humans on the beach that he believes to belong to cannibals. he seeks to kill these cannibals, but later changes his mind as he believes it is cruel to kill.

The story begins to get more interesting as Crusoe starts to get into more problems and conflicts. He finds the problem of the cannibals living in the land near him and that scares him. he runs out of gunpowder and all of a sudden has to construct a new plan to keep the goats in his possession. The most interesting conflict is the foot in the sand. This simple foot drives Crusoe crazy. He lives in fear for almost two years. he has been missing human contact for four years and the first time he sees the first sign of a human, he freaks out and goes scared. You would think that he would want to meet this person, but he is amazingly frightened. Crusoe keeps on creating new things as he learns how to make pottery. he is a very strong man as he has survived on this island for six years now with no human contact and limited food supply. he has also had many life threatining situations and has survived them all. The chapter does not remind me of any tv show. I have learned that Crusoe has been on the island for six years now and that Crusoe is living very close to cannibals and that is very scary to me.

Robinson Crusoe: Blog 2

The next few chapters start off with Crsuoe writing into his journal, starting with the date, "September 30, 1659," saying this is the start of his life on the "Island of Despair," the name he gives to the island. He writes about the ship's remains, the construction of his house, and the destruction of the ship. Crusoe also loses what day it is and this upsets him as he can no longer keep the Sabbath Day holy, which is Sunday. Crusoe also learns to tame his own goat. Crusoe then later makes candles out of goat grease. Crusoe also discovers Barley on the island and survives a deadly earthquake that almost kills him. After the earthquake, a hurricane comes and Crusoe toughs it out and later goes and seeks for provisions that may have come to shore. After weeks of terrible weather, Crusoe then comes down with a fever and has many hallucinations, including one where he sees a man descending from a black cloud on fire. Crusoe begs GOD to end this terrible nightmare and reads from the bible later to pray to the lord. Then we jump to July, the 10th month Crusoe has been on the island. Crusoe takes a full scan of the island as he sees that he will be here for awhile. He finds grapes and other fruits and finds a beautiful valley where he builds another bower, or house. When the one year passing of his arrival on the island comes, he fasts all day. He then runs out of ink and can no longer write in his diary. In the last chapter, Crusoe makes a chart so that he can plan when the rainy seasons are and get the most out of his planting, He also makes wicker baskets, which prove to be very useful.

Crusoe as a character hasn't really changed. He is still very religious as he prays to GOD when in need and reads from the bible daily. I like that in him because it shows that he has faith and that is important. I feel sorry for Crusoe as he has lost track of the days and can no longer keep Sunday sabbath. I would hate to not know what date it was, or even not remember when my birthday was. The theme has mainly stayed the same. He is still tryign to show his will to survive and is still a bright, strong man. We see more in these chapters that Crusoe is struggling and faces new challenges andI only believe that will continue. I believe that the novel is about to take a sudden twist. I feel like Crusoe is going to find something soon that is going to either help him get off the island or put him in serious risk of dying. The novel still suggest's that regular people can survive if they have the strenght and will power to do it. It shows that also the technology was not great back then. If Crusoe had a cell phone or a compass, he may be able to get himself off the island. However, he is trapped in the mid 1600's and he is more alone than ever. Thsi reminds me of American Gladiators because on that show, they have to fight for their survival or get sent home without winning. Crusoe is fighting for his survival everyday and his mind is being put to the test each and every day. I have learned that you can get very deadly sick if you stay out in such bad weather as Crusoe is in. We saw that Crusoe got deadly sick from being in the hurricane and since he wasnt protected enough, he suffered from a fever and almost died.

Robinson Crusoe- pg's 1-57, 2/8/08 Blog Entry

The Story of "Robinson Crusoe" by Daniel Defoe, the story starts off with the editor tells us the readers that this story will provide instructive value and will be a very important lesson to the world and that is his right for publishing it. In the first chapter, we learn of Robinson Kreutznaer, who is forced to change his last name to Crusoe later. He was born in 1632, in the city of York. he is the youngest of 3 brothers. One is in the military, the other went missing. Crusoe and his father differ on Robinson's career choice. Robinson wants to go to sea. his father wants him to take up law. In chapter three, Crusoe takes on the sea and after surviving a sea wreck, he is enslaved by pirates off the coast of Sallee. He takes a job as a fisher during his enslavement. In chapter 3, Crusoe and Xury, a fellow slave, escape on a fishing trip and sail away from Sallee. They arrive at the Canary Islands and Crusoe shows off his gunning skills to the residents of the island. Crusoe and Xury are then picked up by a portuguese ship. In chapter 4, Crusoe lands in Brazil. Crusoe becoms a tobacco planter and does well. As his business improves, Crusoe agrees with another man to go to Guinea to get slaves to help do Crusoe's work. In chapter 5, tings change drastically for Crusoe. On his way to Guinea, Crusoe's ship takes a beating by 2 storms and finds his way onto an island somewhere in the Caribbean. None of Crusoe's crewmembers show up and Crusoe is deserted by himself. In chapter 6, Crusoe goes to the ship's remains and finds food, clothing and arms. He also builds a raft. In capter 7, Crusoe builds a fortress with a hammock. Crusoe later finds 2 goats and kills them both. He then makes a corss with the date September 30, 1659, the date of his arrival on the island. He also records the good and evil points of his experience thus far, until he runs out of ink.

Robinson Crusoe seems like a pretty cool guy. Hes into GOD, as he is always praying to him which shows hes religious. He also seems very bright and understands what to do in dangerous situations. He is also very optimistic as we see in his good and evil chart. For everythign bad happening to him, there is a counterpart good for it. I think the theme so far is faith and destiny. Crusoe is somehow the only man that survives the man that survives from the shipwreck. Also a few years removed from being enslaved by pirates, Crusoe turns it all around and is a successful Tobacco planter. Crusoe shows faith because he believes that the man that put im in the position of being stuck on the island also can get him off and he has faith in GOD to get him off this island. I think the novel is going to portray some sort of conflict that Crusoe is going to need too overcome to prove himself. I dont believe he is just going to find a ship and get off free. Im believe he'll face some sort of problem to prove that he deserves his life and then he will eventually be rescued. The novel says that anyone can survive the worst if you have the will to survive. early on in the book, Crusoe is doing well because he has the tactics it takes to stay alive, even though he is just a regular man. it shows that everyone has the will to survive deep inside them and when put to the test, can suceed. The only thing this reminds me of on previous experience would be the TV show, "LOST". Both portray people stranded on islands and using their will power to survive. I learned that Crusoe's father was German and there original last name was Kreutznaer. Also, i found out that Crusoe is about 27 years old when he arrives on the island. The book is pretty ood so far and im excited about reading more chapters.
